Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) was a Dutch baroque painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of bourgeois life. During his lifetime he was a moderately successful genre painter in the provinces, but not rich, and his wife and children were in debt at his death because he produced relatively few paintings. He is known for his masterful treatment and use of light in his work.
